Transforming Pain Through Energy Healing

Mike Sententia is the founder of Healing Lab and a pioneering energy healer specializing in chronic pain. Mike shares his journey into energy healing, from early experiments as a teenager to decades of refining his techniques and working with clients suffering from debilitating conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and frozen shoulder. Known for offering a money-back guarantee, Mike explains how his unique approach gives clients immediate, measurable results while demystifying energy healing for skeptics. Together, they discuss how energy healing can transform lives by reducing pain and improving overall well-being. The conversation goes through the science behind energy healing, exploring how decades of research demonstrate its effectiveness on inanimate matter, cells, and even chronic conditions in humans. Mike also introduces the concept of “mental posture,” the altered state he uses to connect with and direct energy, and shares how he tailors specific energy techniques to individual conditions for faster and longer-lasting results. With insights into the future of energy healing – including its potential integration with mainstream medicine – this episode offers a fascinating look at how ancient practices are merging with modern science to revolutionize pain management. *Get the full show notes and details on the podcast website, xfactorhypnosis.com/transforming-pain-through-energy-healing* *You can also connect directly with me via joshua@xfactorhypnosis.com* *Please rate and review the show so we know what you like for the future.* Watch the episode here listen to the episode here Welcome to Super States. Today I have a special guest, Mike Sententia. Mike, welcome to the show. Great to be here. Awesome to have you here, Mike. Just to get started, share with me and with the audience what it is that you do and how that can make an impact in the world. I do energy healing for chronic pain—arthritis, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, things like that. Many people I work with come in with debilitating pain, like eight out of ten pain with every step for arthritis clients. Others experience excruciating pain when lifting their arm, even for simple tasks like doing the dishes. It’s not just daily pain—it impacts sleep, mood, and all of the mental states, right? My work aims to reduce pain. I’ve been working with energy for more than 30 years and doing it professionally since 2015. What’s unique about what I do is the money-back guarantee: no upfront payment. Clients come in, feel the results immediately, and then I send them an invoice. If they like the results, they pay. If not, they don’t. That makes it easy for people to try, especially since energy healing can seem a little weird to folks. I’m excited to be here and share more about it. Mike’s Journey Great. You kind of hinted at this, but I find most people have their own journey with whatever they end up doing. Share your story—how did you get here? What’s your backstory? Absolutely. It started when I was a kid. A friend who loved fantasy novels talked about feeling energy from trees. I tried it and felt tingling. I went to the ocean, tuned in, and experienced this full-body tingling sensation. At 12, I had no idea how much was energy and how much was imagination, but it got me curious. I began exploring ways to sense energy and learned techniques to tune in, what I call “mental posture.” In my 20s, I partnered with someone who had chronic knee pain from running. Whenever we danced or she gardened, her knees ached. I began reading the energy of her knees and adjusting it to look like my healthy knees. Her pain would come down, but it returned the next day. After three months of daily work, her pain stopped, and she ran again for the first time in years. This experience, and others like helping her with chronic hives, showed me the potential of energy healing. Later, when she was diagnosed with cancer, I became part of her care team, developing more techniques to ease her pain and improve sleep during chemo. She eventually passed away, but her belief in what I did inspired me to found Healing Lab. The goal? Not just researching energy healing but growing into an industry partner to fund and drive research, make it mainstream, and help the millions living with chronic pain. The Science of Energy Healing I love how you’ve created this organization to help heal people. What inspired that piece for you? Initially, I thought I’d focus on research. But I questioned myself: How confident am I that the results I’ve seen aren’t just placebo? A mentor encouraged me to read the existing research, and I was blown away. Studies show energy healing affects inanimate matter, like water’s pH and infrared reflectivity—things that can’t placebo. It helps cells in petri dishes recover better and prevents cancer metastasis in mice. Plant clippings receiving energy healing survive 90 days, while others die in 30. These results validated my confidence in the work and showed me the potential for broader applications. You mentioned speaking to the science of this. How does it work? Research has been ongoing since the 1970s. Yet, no one fully understands how energy healing works. It doesn’t fit into existing frameworks of physics, chemistry, or biology. Every few generations, we encounter phenomena missing from current science. For example, quantum physics was once a mystery but led to transistors and the internet. Similarly, understanding energy healing could lead to world-changing technologies. Right now, energy healing research is exactly where it should be—still gathering evidence, grappling with questions, and building toward wider acceptance. Misconceptions and Mental Posture As people come to you for energy work, I’m sure they have certain expectations or beliefs. What are some common misconceptions? The biggest misconception is that you have to believe in energy healing for it to work. Most of my clients are skeptics who only try it because of the guarantee, yet they get the same results as others. While client beliefs don’t seem to matter, my mental state is crucial. I

I’m excited to jump in with this, Carly. Describe what you do and the kind of impact it has on people’s lives. The Role of a Human Behavior Specialist Yeah, so I’m a human behavior specialist and business consultant. When I work with business people, I like to approach it from the inside out. There’s so much we can do externally, taking all the actions we’re supposed to, but many of us find that things still don’t work out. And it leaves us wondering, “What’s really going on here?” So I also focus on the inner dynamic—understanding where our challenges lie, what we might be avoiding, or even what fears are at play. When we address those, we find new levels of inspiration and drive in business. Business is such a great tool for creating impact. I love working with business owners who care about people—not just their customers or clients but also their employees, their teammates. It’s inspiring to help them navigate their inner challenges so they can reach people in a bigger, more impactful way. What Exactly Is a Human Behavior Expert? When I was looking at your website, I was really curious about the term “human behavior expert.” What exactly does that mean? When we think about human behavior, we often go through books and resources trying to train ourselves to be a certain way. But human behavior is dynamic; we display both “light” and “shadow” sides. And no matter how much you try, you can’t get rid of a part of yourself. You can try as much as you want, but if I sit with you for a few minutes and ask a few questions, you’ll see that those parts are still there. They serve a purpose. When I focus on human behavior, I focus on why behaviors come forward in the first place. Some behaviors might challenge our lives, so we work on understanding why they’re there. Instead of getting rid of them, we transform them. For example, I might work with a group in a workshop setting where my goal is to get everyone to a place of transformation. That might mean being “thorough and nice,” but also a bit intense. It’s not about being one way or the other—it’s about using all parts of ourselves to keep moving forward. The Value of Both Sides I really like that frame of “using all parts of ourselves.” It sounds a lot like shadow work—integrating all these aspects to create something whole. Exactly. Shadow work is a great way to think of it. But even “shadow” is just a label. We often think of our shadow side as dark, but what if I told you your shadow side is actually part of your light? I want people to appreciate all of themselves and realize that what we label as “shadow” or “light” is really just different facets of who we are. Both sides interchange regularly, and we label them based on someone else’s experience of us. Let’s say I help someone with something, and they praise me. I might label that as “light.” But if I support someone and they get upset with me for stepping in, I might see that side as “dark.” But the truth? It’s both. Sometimes people need support; other times, they need to be challenged. And it’s those challenging moments that can actually be the most transformative. Reframing Stories and Labels Yeah, I resonate with that. You’re calling it “the label.” I might say “the story” we put around it—it’s the same thing. We’re making up meaning and applying it to different parts of ourselves or our experiences. Yes! Story is another great way to explain it. We often categorize experiences as “good” or “bad,” but the “bad” experiences often pull out parts of us we hadn’t explored, parts that can inspire us in new ways. Those challenging moments are sometimes the most innovative. We might initially think, “I don’t want to go through that again,” but later, we realize how it shaped us. And when everything’s going smoothly, we don’t feel

Michelle, I always like to get a feel for my guests by asking them, what is it that you do? So share with us what you do and, but also how that makes an impact on people’s lives. Well, it’s all in one basket, but it sounds like there’s a lot of different baskets, but it’s not. It’s all under mysticism and mind. I teach people, I have affirmation pop songs that have been downloaded millions of times all over the world. Got over 400 songs, many albums. And so they create great healing and change people’s minds without them having to emotionalize it or think about it. And I also have apps with my team to do with manifestation and mysticism and meditation and prayer, lots of amazing apps to do with, see again in the same basket. I also teach deep mysticism and deep meditation. And I also teach how to write a book, business. Mm-hmm. See, I like to everything that I’ve ever learnt because I was a rock singer in Australia, everything that I’ve ever learnt as a rock singer, as a manager of my band, as a singer songwriter, as a business person, because if you can manage your own band and make it become extremely successful in your country and then overseas, you’re a good business person. So I like to teach people a little bit of everything. And so my seminars are sort of a little bit rock-concerty, along with quieter times of meditation and they’re just a whole lot of fun, but they really change people’s paradigm and the way they think and consciousness because it’s all consciousness. And so that’s what it is. It’s all of that plus more. One big umbrella with one big basket. Yeah. What I like about how you just described that is we go through life and we kind of take, have these experiences. And you, I mean, you probably had this experience too. Like I know I have. How does this all fit together? And as you’re kind of trying this over here and you try this over there and what it sounds like you’ve done is found a way to basically bring all of your life experiences together into how you can help people. Yes, and it’s all happened through spirit. It’s all been through consciousness. None of it was intended because I was happy as a rock singer. We’ve just got our big record label. We were touring at one stage seven years nonstop, which is a world record in Australia, I think, or something. The Turning Point Wow. And the venues in Australia back in the 80s were huge. So you had to have a huge following before a record label would even sign you. So we worked our guts out for years before we got a record label. So it’s very, very tough. It’s a tough world, but I loved it. So I had no sense of ever doing anything different. So it’s quite fascinating the way our spirit works from our past lives, karma from our experience. It’s just, it’s just fascinating to me. I love to assist people to change their trajectory by using their life experience into maybe writing a book about what they do or single parent, what’s it like to grow, you know, I mean, there’s so many things that people can do to have more, to manifest more wealth and more freedom in their life. And that’s what it’s one of the things that gives me great joy. Number one, great joy is helping people awaken. But number two is helping people have a purpose and make more money because then they have more freedom. In this particular world plane, there are a lot of different world planes that don’t have anything like money, but this particular world plane is based on money. And it’s fascinating to me how people would rather talk about their sex lives than money. And it’s such an interesting thing and an easy thing to manifest if they just don’t know how at the moment. Yeah. So just describe to us how you got to this point. So you kind of insinuated started out as a rock star and something happened. So share, share with us

I’m excited to have this conversation, Leonard. Share with us what you do, how that makes an impact for people. Passion for Shame-Free Sexuality Yes, I am so passionate about sexuality and guilt-free, shame-free sexuality. I talk so naturally about it, as if it is something totally normal as it should be. I find a lot of people are very shy, very embarrassed. And I just very naturally talk about it. I think the big part for me is to break down the conditioning around that. That really is what drives me. And I think just by transmitting that experience myself, I find it really helps people. Specifically on the men’s sexuality part, there’s so much that we should have been taught as boys and at school. So I really love helping men to not just get rid of some problems on performance or performance anxiety or premature ejaculation, but also to get to the next level of their lovemaking potential and their sexuality. To freely and fully express their sexuality and to really naturally do that, because I think it’s such an underlying aspect of our lives. If we execute our sexuality and it’s aligned with the rest of our energy centers and our spirituality, then I think we can really fully show up in this world. Yeah, I fully support you in this journey that you’re on and what you’re doing. I love it. It’s such an important thing to release that guilt, shame, like all the bullshit stuff that gets there, that happens throughout our life. And like you said, kind of level up, get to that next level. That’s awesome. Personal Journey and Background We all have a bit of that, even if we think we don’t. Then you go into some of these workshops and you go, wow, I didn’t realize there was a level somewhere there still. It creeps in so easily. I had a bit of experience of that growing up and in later teenage years about the religious conditioning about it. Sex before marriage going to burn in hell. So I talk from a bit of a personal experience. I only made love or lost my virginity at the age of 21 because I really had this fear. And then after I realized that, wow, this is just terrible conditioning. It is so sad for people not to experience their sexuality. So you started kind of giving us some little hints here, but share with us your story. How did you get to be a men’s sexuality coach? From Corporate Career to Sexuality Coach That’s an interesting story. The sexuality has been a theme throughout my life. I studied law and business and went into a corporate career. By my early 40s, I achieved relatively fast success quickly. I was the CEO of a financial services company and group. At the same time, I started experiencing orgasms without ejaculating. I could really breathe energy up and not ejaculate and then make love for long times. This just started happening to me. It’s super interesting, these two things at the same time. When this was happening, there was no one I could talk to. Definitely not in a business context in a boardroom. Generally speaking, men don’t talk about sexuality with each other much apart from some boasting. In my mid-40s, in 2009, I felt a big internal shift in my life. I felt I shouldn’t be doing what I was doing work-wise anymore. I would walk into the office and it felt so inauthentic. I was quite bored with what I was doing. I felt a calling to do something different. World Journey and Spiritual Exploration I distracted myself for four years with a lot of what I call sex tracks and jacuzzis, living in Clifton Beach in Cape Town. Eventually in 2012, I just surrendered. I resigned, sold and gave away most of my possessions, bought a one-way ticket to Lima, Peru. That started the five-year journey around the world. I came into contact with various practices across all areas, from India into sacred geometry and crystal healing to spiritual sexual shamanism in Guatemala, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, all over, tantra, Taoist workshops. I realized that what I’ve been living for 20 years of my life is actually ancient Daoist
The Power of Energy Medicine

Watch the episode here listen to the episode here Welcome to Super States. I’m here today with my guest, Ashley Brothers. Ashley, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. I’m excited to have this conversation. So Ashley, I always like to start the chat with usually the same question, so that is describe to us what you do and how that makes an impact on people’s lives. Ashley’s Work and Approach Most people come to me with a history of abuse, trauma, or neglect, or some sort of chronic illness that they want to shift or change. And so I’m looking for things in both ordinary reality and non-ordinary reality that they have to either start or stop doing or change in some way to have the results they want. So I’ll basically interview them, ask what’s happening for them, what areas of their life are not working and what they want to manifest. And that’s where I start to look for solutions through my intuition, through tapping in with my guides, my allies, or just my own higher self to find out what they have to start or stop doing in either ordinary or non-ordinary reality to get this result that they want. Some things are actually spiritual blockages and some things are just bad habits. So most people have had something happen in their life that kind of sent them down this kind of a path. Tell us a little bit about your journey. Like what brought you, what was the things that happened that brought you here? Ashley’s Personal Journey So I’m one of those weirdos that was sort of what I call born awake, where I was born with the ability to see, hear, feel things before they happened, but I was also able to see spirits. And so I was like this little baby hanging on the edge of my crib instead of napping and watching what I called the gray people walking around the room. And it’s basically like shadow beings or spirits. They were energies that saw basically an opportunity to mess with something innocent. And so my poor parents could hear me basically screaming through the floor for years, wondering what the heck’s happening to me and why I’m falling out of bed or the crib all the time. And so it started with that. And then it started to manifest into having premonitions about accidents or death. And so I would have to put myself in a position, even at the age of like 11 or younger, to prevent something bad happening to my mother, to myself or to other people. And so I didn’t know really how to call upon those gifts or skills at will. Until I started my training in 2004, so I was about 26 years old when I first started my training first in Reiki and then in shamanism. And basically the whole premise of shamanism is that there is an intelligence within everything and everyone that you can tap into for either information, power, protection, and healing. And so they taught us how to go into these alternate states of consciousness to get that information or power. And so I would use that in my healing practice to help clients shift from one state of consciousness or one state of being to another. And so if a person has a trauma situation, they have a trauma, they’re in a state of trauma, a trauma consciousness, a trauma identity. That you can shift by changing the energies that are within them. And so that may be like, I need to remove a wounding imprint, or remove some sort of intrusive energy that’s stuck to them, and then restore any essence or vitality they lost as a result of their life’s experiences. And you do that through the trance work of the shamanistic journey. Understanding Shamanic Practices and States of Consciousness Yeah. And that type of trance work is actually, it’s been around forever. So if you think about it like a meditative state. States, you go into alpha theta brainwave frequencies through breathing or meditation, you’re changing your state of consciousness. So a lot of people are running around in their beta brainwave frequencies, or they’re in some sort of survival mode where we’re back here on the brainstem, which is all about basically emotion and survival. And it’s hard to be creative. It’s hard to be intuitive. It’s hard to create a new sense of self

Watch the episode here listen to the episode here Introduction Welcome to Super States. I am here with Phil Farber. Phil, thank you so much for being on the show. Why don’t you describe what you do and how that transforms lives and maybe for yourself as well. Okay. I have a little, I don’t know, a little issue describing what I do. I’m always confronted with this and publishers and so on. Tell us what you do on the back of the book. But essentially, I mean, my original path of career and so on is I’m a writer. And I spent many years as a journalist and a technical writer and a science writer and all that kind of stuff. And so I’ve written several books on related subjects and so on. But over the years, and actually since I was a kid, I’ve been interested in hypnosis and NLP and altered states and psychedelics and all of that kind of stuff. So in pursuing that, I sort of at one end I got into that a little bit to be a better writer. But once I got into it, I realized that was a whole world into itself. And so now I’m an NLP hypnosis practitioner and so on. And I’ve been doing that for many years, for going on 40 years now as a hypnotist. So it’s fun in itself and I have clients who I work with personally and on the phone. And I do teach workshops and seminars and so on a wide range of subjects ranging from NLP to traditional ceremonial magic and the Western esoteric tradition, things like that. Combining NLP, Hypnosis, and Magic And one of the things that really fascinates me about the, your take on magic is how you apply these NLP and hypnotic processes to them. So tell me a little bit about how you got to that point. Like what, what brought you to bring all this together? Well, I mean, let’s see. I really started, there are a few kind of things when I was very young sort of led me into the altered states and hypnosis path. One of them was my father, who was a physicist, he worked his way through college as a stage magician. And part of his routine was he had a stage hypnosis routine. And so. As a result, there were all these great books on hypnosis in the house. And I was told at a very young age, don’t read those. Those are for adults, right? They’re dangerous things for kids to play with. So of course, by age 10, I was reading them and practicing hypnosis with my friends. I mean, what else could I do? People say that kind of stuff. And so I was practicing that. I learned how to meditate around that time. I mean, I was like 10 or 11. And then when I was 16 years old, I had a bike accident and a bicycle accident and severe head trauma and so on. And I had a classic near-death experience. I was out there somewhere. There was a light and an entity and it told me, it’s not your time yet. I mean, the classic kind of stuff, right? And I came back from that and I spent many years after that going like, you know, what the hell. and trying to figure out, you know, what was that all about? And I mean, the big lesson from that was that, wow, there’s just a lot more to consciousness and to our life than we are generally told about, right? Now, I’m still an agnostic about what happens during an NDA, right? It could have been a hallucination. It could have been something triggered by my brain, you know, whatever. I don’t really know. But I do know that something happened that was very much apart from normal consciousness. Now, fast forward three or four years. I’m going to college. And I started, I came across some books on NLP. NLP was a pretty new thing then. This was late 1970s. And… I was fascinated by it. I was like, this is the… I was taking… In college, I was taking courses in psycholinguistics, which was the study of the psychology of language. And when I found the NLP books, I was like, wow, no, this is really what I was looking for. Right? The psycholinguistic courses were… They were interesting. We got a little bit of like Noam Chomsky’s theories on grammar,
The Neuroscience of Hypnosis

The Neuroscience of Hypnosis In this episode, Joshua welcomes Terance Schmidt to the show, who shares his journey and impact on people’s lives through hypnosis. Watch the episode here listen to the episode here Introduction This week, I speak with James Harrison. James is a clinical hypnotist, a life enrichment coordinator for elders, and an author. He’s about to help us understand the link between neuroscience and hypnosis. Listen up, because here we go with the neuroscience of hypnosis, insights into the brain, with James Harrison. Welcome to Super States. I’m here with James Harrison, James, I’m excited to have you on the show. Yeah, I’m glad to be here. What do you want to say to start? James, why don’t you start by describing what you do and let us know how that makes a difference in people’s lives. James’s Work and Background Sure, these days, I’m a Life Enrichment coordinator in an elder care facility. I work with folks with dementia and complex mental health problems, and it’s kind of an extended mind model where I’m helping them do task completion, which is part of what gets hard with age and with dementia. People can follow through less and less, but with somebody there to help them, they can have a good day. They can ground and orient to reality, often, not all the time. It’s a pretty cruel thing that happens to the brain. It’s literally degenerative, but I came into that after kind of a long history of doing Jungian Shadow Work, becoming a clinical hypnotist, and now I’m writing a book on clinical hypnosis. From my experience working in a hard science medical institution, trying to explain it to the doctors and nurses that I work with, who, depending on where they went to school and what their training was like, they may or may not be ambivalent about hypnosis, and every hypnotist has come across this 1000 times in our career. You know, I took that idea to our medical director. Could I do a pain clinic? Could I do this or that? Long story short, the book comes out of that. Is there a way to describe what we do in clinical hypnosis that is distinct from psychotherapy and that kind of approach that dovetails with current neuroscience? So, you know, long story short, that’s a piece of my path. Yeah. And, you know, I really, one of the things I appreciate about you, James is you kind of have an art, an artist background, right? You’re, you were a sculptor for many years and that shifted when you started moving into the Jungian Shadow Work and hypnosis, but the work that you do like you’re not necessarily hanging up a “I’m a hypnotist” shingle. You’re using all these skills that you’ve got to make a difference. I want to say it’s not exactly like a small scale, like it’s making a big difference, but it’s doing making a big difference for these individuals that are at the end of their life, really, and it’s palliative care, is what we call it. Hypnosis and Deep Work There’s a thing. I mean, I was, you know, I did clinical hypnosis before COVID, and I kind of tended to fall into doing deep, really deep dive work with folks, like two and three hour sessions, a lot of past life regression. I love doing that kind of work. It’s a mystical experience for the practitioner and the client, but it’s kind of weird to you know, oh, it’s noon, I gotta go get a sandwich, having a profound experience, and then you can’t really talk about it, because you you know, without, you know, your client, privacy and that sort of thing, so a couple of those a day, it’s kind of a trip. And when COVID hit, I’m like, I’ve got to switch it up. And I ended up, you know, there’s a backstory, but I ended up working in a care facility with 40 beds, and I love it because it’s dated, it’s daily contact with lots of folks. And, you know, the artist part of me was about, I kind of did large, large scale reenactments of or my attempt at healing childhood trauma around some really bad stuff that happened to me and a lot of us in this line of work, if we’re empathic, or some version of that, of having special senses, if you will, it’s often because of things adversity that we went through. So the art became an arena where I was safe and had control and could manifest something from another realm, in a way. I mean, I’m not sure how else to put it, I worked in material, but it taught me how to connect ideas and material, the immaterial and the material. So that

Watch the episode here listen to the episode here Introduction to Trance Welcome to Super States. Let’s talk about trance. Merriam-Webster defines trance as a sleep-like state, like deep hypnosis, usually characterized by partly suspended animation with diminished or absent sensory and motory activity, or a state of profound abstraction or absorption. Remember that a state of profound abstraction or absorption. Dictionary.com defines trance as a half-conscious state seemingly between asleep and awake in which the ability to function voluntarily may be suspended, a dazed or bewildered condition, a state of complete mental absorption or deep musing. Again, remember there’s that absorption idea. Wikipedia defines trance as a state of semi-consciousness in which a person is not self-aware and is either altogether unresponsive to external stimuli or is selectively responsive in following the directions of the person who has induced the trance, if any. Trance states can occur involuntarily or unbeknownst. Think of like a highway trance. The second definition Wikipedia gives is the term trance may be associated with hypnosis, meditation, magic, flow, prayer, psychedelic drugs, and altered states of consciousness. Human Longing for Trance States As humans, we long for trance states. We want them. This is why football games with fans, we go into this ecstatic trance state together, or like a rock concert. One of the most powerful technologies created in modern times is amplified sound to be able to send this audio out to thousands, even millions of people and create their own trance state all at the same time. Historical Perspectives on Trance Trance is as old as humanity. We’ve been telling stories around the fire ever since we had a fire. We still do that. We watch television. We used to listen to radio, but we watch movies. We’re sitting around a flashing light and telling each other stories, whether personally or being projected to us. And we go into a trance when we get absorbed into that experience. There are other ways we’ve experienced trance through history. What I described around storytelling, that’s a more quieter, internal kind of trance. Think of it like a meditative type of trance. But then there are other kinds of trance as well. Types of Trance Battle Trance: This happens in modern times, but even in the past, there were the berserkers. They would wear their bear suits and rage and get into a battle trance. Vikings would do that. Religious Ecstasy: Whether through prayer or think of like a revival where everyone is together and praying together and creating this group trance state. Mystic and Medium Trances: Mystics have used trance through history. Mediums use trance to speak to the dead. Oracle of Delphi: They’ve uncovered that there were some kind of gases that came through the rocks in the cave at the Oracle of Delphi. This is what would induce the trance state for the Oracle. Shamanic Trances: Shamans have used trance states, whether through drumming or chanting or dancing. Magicians’ Trances: This is a very old technology. Personal Experiences with Trance I have been in love with trance basically my whole life. As a kid, I would get lost in reading. I would spend hours in a book, totally absorbed. Remember that absorption, that’s a trance state. As I got a little older, I started playing Dungeons and Dragons and we would create a group trance together. At the age of 13, I found a book in my school library that taught me self-hypnosis, very simple things, but mostly relaxing the body, relaxing the mind and getting in a focused state. And then I got older. I started listening to music and music brought me into this powerful trance state, which it does for most people. I started dancing. I would go dancing at clubs, teen clubs and that was another way of creating a more ecstatic trance. I also was an artist as I grew up. And so I would get lost in drawing and in painting and in creating. I’d kind of get into this flow state. Adult Experiences with Trance As I got older, became an adult, there were other things that showed up. I started becoming sexually active and sex was a powerful way to alter my mind and my state of consciousness very quickly. I learned about psychedelics and started expanding my mind with psychedelics. I would attend drum circles. This got me interested in other magical practices and in ritual. Ritual is another way of creating a trance and that can be done in lots of ways. Sweat Lodge is another ecstatic state where you’re dealing with the heat and just kind of moving through it
